About ISAW's PhD Program:

Encompassing the ancient world from the western Mediterranean to East Asia, from the Neolithic to the early Medieval period, the Institute for the Study of the Ancient World is focused on creating a new generation of scholars whose work crosses over the disciplinary boundaries of traditional departments.

Matriculated PhD students in good standing at ISAW receive five years of fellowship support as they progress successfully through the program and can apply for a sixth year of support. ISAW graduate fellowships cover the cost of tuition, fees, and health insurance premiums and provide an annual stipend, which is currently $43,969 for the 2021-22 academic year.

ISAW looks for students who:

  • Have sufficient preparation in at least one discipline or domain in order to work beyond its limits.

  • Have proficiency in at least two languages appropriate to their area of study (one ancient, one modern).

  • Are committed to research that crosses boundaries of time, space, and discipline; students whose academic interests include parts of the ancient Old World that are often underrepresented in traditional academic departments, including Africa, Central Asia, South Asia, and Southeast Asia, are especially welcome to apply.
